the world, especially the game dev world, needs more honest thought processes & blogs like these. so proud, and it's actually incredibly inspiring to read, because whilst i feel for you in your suffering, it's a little less isolating to know that i'm (and you, by extension) not alone in this. sending love and you got this - you can only do your best, and what you've made so far in and of itself has made myself (and countless others, i can assure you) extremely excited and happy, and dreaming of a lost, simpler, yet still terrifying/evocative time. <33
Thanks for posting this, Emily. I've been struggling with my own game project, wondering if I should continue it, why I should even bother with it, etc. I found a lot of comfort in this post. Looking forward to lily’s world XD when it comes out!
Im late to this post but I am genuinely so excited for Lily's World XD to come out. I honestly dont know much about game development or coding in general, but the idea and story of Lily's World XD is amazing to me. It sounds like the type of game all the big youtubers are going to be streaming when it comes out and I am so excited for that as well !! Just wanted to say I believe in you and good luck with the game development :D
I really enjoyed this read, and the honesty was really appreciated. I am in my first year of computer programming, and plan to take game programming directly after. There's been days where I have questioned my choices. Than I see them coding, testing, and working together- I realize that it is indeed what's calling me. I feel the same sense of pride for the craft, and that's what keeps me going. Your newsletter touched on so many points, thoughts, feelings, and emotions I have similarly had myself.
I absolutely loved this. I think it is very important to share how difficult something you are passionate about and love can be!
Because if you don't, we end up with problems we have today where everyone puts on the filters of social media and how perfect everything is. So when someone pursues something they think something is wrong with them or what their doing because they struggle. When the truth is the "perfect" version just didn't talk about how they struggled. So I'm glad you brought it up!
(Personally I'm coding my own visual novel in Unity and everything you described here is so legit it's not even funny. I love it but like it's so tedious and frustrating. Yet it is so glorious when you figure out the problem and see it function properly it makes it so worth it!)
I have been talking to my gamer buddies about Lilly's World XD, sharing it and such too, especially since my buddy at my day job is a huge indie horror fan too! He seemed excited for it! I'm very excited for you to reach your goals and publish it fully!! I also love the comment you said of "wanting it to be successful enough to justify making another game" beautifully stated goal!
Anyways, sorry for the long comment! I loved this and I hope you do more like this. Hearing this stuff makes it feel more like art and artist, passion projects, like this work is your baby! I absolutely am grateful to hear thoughts from creators on their work because tbh, it's not done enough. You got this!!

Was the feedback constructive so that you know what was not fun about it?
I inquired more about why it isn't fun and now it's been addressed in my build!
